In the last few years, Tesla has managed to achieve the seemingly impossible. In an era where hybrid vehicles were struggling to gain a foothold in the market, let alone EVs, the American manufacturer has not only managed to make name for itself, but has become the most valuable American car company.
While it was the Model S sedan that cemented Tesla’s position in the EV market, Model X propelled the company to automotive stardom. The all-electric long-range SUV is unlike any other car on the road. It packs features we’ve never seen before and offers performance levels that are unheard of in family cars.
The P100D is the range-topping variant of the Model X. It’s propelled by two electrical motors, with one on each axle. The electric motors are powered by a lithium-ion-battery pack that’s incorporated into a skateboard-style chassis for optimal weight distribution. The Model X P100D has a 289-mile range and can be charged from 20-80% in just 30 mins with a 150kW charger.
Interior and Tech Features
Other than the sleek and outlandish design, the Pagani Huayra-esque gullwing doors are the first thing you notice about the Model X. Place yourself in the finely-sculpted leather driving seat, and your attention will instantly divert to the panoramic windshield that stretches over the front seats.
The cabin of the Model X features a minimalistic design. Most of the controls are placed in the giant central touchscreen panel, which acts as a both, an infotainment system and instruments panel. The driving position and visibility are superb.
Moreover, the Model X P100D is equipped with a wide array of proximity sensors and can detect how much space it has around it. It can even automatically fold it wing mirrors in tight spaces.
Performance: “Ludicrous” is Just about the Right Word
Put the Model XP100D in the notorious “ludicrous” mode, and the family-friendly SUV turns into a fully-fledged supercar—sans the exhaust noise. Now, the Model X weighs well over 5,000 lbs., but the way it accelerates simply beggars belief. In “ludicrous” mode, it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, which is the same as a V12-powered Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
The secret behind these insane acceleration figures is the power output. In Ludicrous mode, the electric motors of the Model X P100D deliver 588 hp and a staggering 920 lbs.-ft. of torque. However, it’s not about how much power the electric motors make—it’s the way its delivered. Unlike a conventional internal combustion engine that progressively delivers power as the revs build up, the electric motors in the Tesla can send deliver maximum torque to the wheels right from the get-go.
