Just a few years ago, the Lamborghini Aventador was considered the undisputed ruler of the upper echelon of the supercar segment, with mid-range supercars, like the Ferrari 488 GTB, the McLaren 650S, and the Aventador’s own little brother – the Huracan – vying for supremacy in the “junior” supercar segment.
However, a couple of years ago, McLaren decided to break the status quo by launching the 720S. The successor to the already ballistic 650S, the 720S took the performance envelope of the mid-level supercar to an unprecedented level. The result? Well, the supposedly “mid-range” 720S is now knocking on the door of supercar royalty.
Let’s see how the McLaren 720S compares to the big bad Aventador S.
Looks
The 720S is, by common consensus, the most beautiful McLaren to come from Woking since the mythical McLaren F1. In every line and every detail, its breathtaking – a perfect example of form following function.
However, while the McLaren 720S is a true masterpiece of automotive design elegance, it comes nowhere near the big Lambo in terms of drama, theater, and flair. The Aventador is the closest thing to a fighter jet you’ll see on the road.
Performance
In terms of outright power, there’s little to choose between the McLaren and the Lamborghini. The Aventador S produces 730 hp, while the 720S is a shade behind at 710 hp. However, how these cars produce this astonishing power is quite different.
The 720S relies on a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that produces astonishing amounts of low and mid-range torque. The Aventador, on the other hand, takes the classic route and has a monstrous 6.5-liter V12. However, the McLaren is significantly lighter than its Italian counterpart, weighing it at just under 3,000 lbs. whereas the Lambo comes in at around 4,000 lbs.
The result? Well, in terms of acceleration, the 720S easily outstrips the Aventador. It only takes 7.8 seconds to get from 0 to 124 mph, which is a full second quicker than the Aventador S. However, the Aventador strikes back in the top speed department. While the 720S will top out at 212 mph, the Aventador will keep pulling until it hits a Vmax of 217 mph.
